Are Kiln-Dried Logs Worth the Extra Cost?

Are Kiln-Dried Logs Worth the Extra Cost?

Kiln-Dried vs Seasoned Logs: A Practical Guide for Manchester Stove Owners

If you've been shopping for firewood recently, you'll have noticed that kiln-dried logs cost more than traditionally seasoned wood. It's a reasonable question to ask: is the price difference actually worth it? The answer depends on what you're burning in, how often you use it, and what matters most to you. This guide lays it out plainly so you can decide.

What's the Difference?

Seasoned logs are timber that has been cut and left to dry naturally outdoors, typically for one to three years. Drying times vary with species, climate, and how the wood is stacked. The result is wood that has reduced — but not always consistently low — moisture content.

Kiln-dried logs are dried in a controlled, heated kiln, bringing moisture content reliably down to 20% or below. This is the threshold required for Ready To Burn certification, the UK's voluntary quality standard for firewood. Because the process is controlled, kiln-dried logs deliver consistent quality every time.

Our Ready To Burn page explains what the certification means and how it applies to the logs we sell.

Side-by-Side Comparison

Factor Kiln-Dried Logs Seasoned Logs
Moisture content Reliably ≤ 20% Variable; can be 25–40%+
Ready To Burn certified Yes (where stated) Not typically
Ease of lighting Lights quickly and easily Can be harder, especially in damp conditions
Heat output Higher heat per log Lower; wetter wood loses energy to steam
Tar and residue build-up Lower Higher with wetter wood
Appliance maintenance Cleaner burns, less frequent sweeping needed More frequent chimney sweeping likely required
Price per bag/tonne Higher upfront cost Lower upfront cost
Convenience Ready to use on delivery May need further drying after delivery
Storage required Minimal — use straight away Covered, ventilated storage recommended

Does Higher Moisture Content Matter?

Yes — meaningfully so. When a log burns, any water it contains has to be driven off as steam before the wood can combust fully. The more moisture in the wood, the more energy is wasted on evaporation rather than producing heat. This means you'll typically go through more logs to achieve the same warmth compared with drier wood.

Wetter wood also tends to produce more tar and creosote, which can accumulate in flue liners and stove glass over time. This isn't a reason to alarm — regular sweeping and maintenance will keep your appliance safe — but it's a practical consideration when comparing running costs over a season.

What Is Ready To Burn?

Ready To Burn is a certification scheme run by Woodsure, the UK's only wood fuel quality assurance scheme. Logs carrying the Ready To Burn logo have been independently verified to contain 20% moisture or less. Since February 2021, it has been a legal requirement in England to only sell wood in volumes under 2m³ if it meets the Ready To Burn standard or equivalent.

All of our premium kiln-dried logs are sold in compliance with these requirements. You can read more on our Ready To Burn page.

Is the Extra Cost Worth It?

For most people with a wood-burning stove or multi-fuel appliance, kiln-dried logs make practical sense. The higher heat output means you use fewer logs for the same warmth, which offsets some of the upfront price difference. The cleaner burn also means less mess in the firebox and potentially less spent on chimney sweeping.

If you have good, covered outdoor storage and are buying well in advance of the season, properly sourced and stored seasoned logs can be a reasonable choice — provided the moisture content has genuinely come down. The difficulty is that moisture in seasoned logs can be inconsistent.

For those who want reliability — especially for daily use through the heating season — kiln-dried is the lower-hassle option.
